Since 1971, Hart's company, Peter D. Hart Research Associates, has conducted more than 6,000 public opinion polls. Peter appears frequently on major television programs that discuss public policy issues, including Meet the Press, The Today Show and The NewsHour with Jim Lehrer.

Kit Dietz, a consultant and former president of Tripifoods, will present research on how the new tobacco programs are affecting distributors, explaining how companies can best maximize the program benefits. (He will follow up this presentation with a roundtable the next day.)

As the cost of cigarettes skyrockets, illegal activity involving this product continues to rise as well. T.C. Richards of Philip Morris will speak about the specifics of the growing problem of counterfeit and contraband cigarettes, explaining how they affect manufacturers and distributors. She will discuss the actions Philip Morris is taking to disrupt the illegal activity involving the company's products.

4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. “Tobacco Legislative Update—A National and State Overview,” Salons II and III, 2nd fl. Discussion moderated by AWMA CEO Scott Ramminger. Panelists: Tommy Payne, executive vice president of external relations for R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Holdings, and John Hoel, vice president of government affairs–tobacco for Altria Corporate Services Inc.

FDA regulation, rising taxes, fire-safe cigarettes, the MSA agreement—there is no shortage of issues for the tobacco industry. Tommy Payne of RJR and John Hoel of Altria will discuss the state and national government effort’s to regulate and legislate tobacco sales.

Murray Kessler, president of U.S. Smokeless Tobacco Company, will discuss the business opportunities for distributors in the “other tobacco products” (OTP) market, with a focus on moist smokeless tobacco. He will also cover legislative efforts to tax and control sales of smokeless tobacco.

Mark Manney, president of Market Integrity, will talk about how you can guard your distributor business from theft, both inside the warehouse and out. Proactive and reactive loss prevention and process improvement “best practices” will be discussed in detail. Also find out how you can implement structured hiring procedures to carefully and cost-effectively weed out dishonest or undesirable employees. Mark has 32 years of experience in retail, distribution and bottling/vending/foodservice loss prevention.

Tom Singer, a principal with Tompkins Associates, will be discussing radio-frequency identification (RFID) and what distributors need to know to get up to speed on this technology. Sunrise 2005, Global Trade Identification Numbers, and product-data synchronization will also be explored. Tom is the author of the white paper “Understanding RFID: A Practical Guide for Supply Chain Professionals.” His areas of expertise include the design, development and implementation of supply-chain asset-management systems.
