Card Check Legislation – Action Needed!
AWMA has been working with the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the Coalition for a Democratic Workplace to promote the message that the misnamed “Employee Free Choice Act” or “card check” would deny workers the right to a secret ballot stripping them of their basic freedom in deciding in private whether or not to unionize.
Both the House and Senate recently introduced legislation – H.R. 1409 and S. 560 – that would eliminate the secret ballot and would impose significant new penalties on employers for violations of the National Labor Relations Act, with no new penalties on unions or labor organizations. The bills would also write contracts through government imposed arbitration, forced arbitration would impose unreasonable and inflexible terms and cause an employer to lose control over their operations, preventing them from growing their business.
These bills – if enacted – would have a devastating impact on our industry and would severely hurt small employers who are the primary source of new jobs and are the backbone of our ailing economy. These misguided initiatives in the House and Senate will only further exacerbate the significant economic problems our country is currently facing.
AWMA urges our members to take a moment to make their views known to their lawmakers in opposition to these bills.
