Starbucks Fights Back with “Pour Your Own” Coffee

Seattle, Washington-based Starbucks is looking for new ways to connect with their customers and improve the “Starbucks experience” says CEO Howard Schultz who returned to run the company in January. One new change is “pour your own” coffee which the chain is testing at several locations. Customers can pay before or after getting their own coffee from a brewer located near the condiment bar.

This month the company is introducing a new coffee blend called Pike Place Roast. Most Starbucks locations will use an automated espresso machine which is easily viewed by customers so they can watch their drinks being made. Last month, the company heralded a new loyalty card and a machine called the Clover that makes premium drip coffee. Schultz also plans to return coffee bean grinding to the stores.

Not all plans work out, of course. Starbucks tested an 8-ounce, $1 cup of regular coffee with free refills in Seattle in recent months, but has decided not to introduce it as a regular item.
