Florida Governor Opposes Proposed Cigarette Tax Hike

While a State Senate committee passed a $1 a pack cigarette tax hike plan, Florida Gov. Charlie Crist has said that he does not support raising the State’s cigarette tax, reports The Sun-Sentinel.  The staunch opposition from Crist and the Florida House’s Republican leadership “all but doom” the tax hikes chances, according to the report.

Jose Gonzalez, a lobbyist with the Associated Industries of Florida, said that raising the cigarette excise tax so dramatically was not fair to smokers. “You’re talking about a $1.1 billion increase in revenue, but this is borne by 20% of the population who smoke,” he said.

The current Florida state tax is 34-cents per pack of cigarettes, the sixth lowest tax in the nation, and has not been raised since 1990.
