Montana Requires LIP Cigarettes Beginning May 1, 2008
Effective May 1, all cigarettes sold in Montana will be required to meet low ignition propensity (LIP) standards under a law passed by the State legislature in 2007. The law is based on the New York State “fire-safe” standard passed in 2004. State Fire Marshal Allen Lorenz said cigarette-related fires are one of the primary causes of fire deaths, accounting for about four fatalities per year in Montana, reports KULR. Retail outlets in Montana have been phasing out the old cigarettes over the past few months.
