House Subcommittee Approves Legislation Restricting Postal Service Delivery of Tobacco
The House Subcommittee on Federal Workforce, Postal Service and the District of Columbia approved legislation on Tuesday that would restrict the shipment of tobacco products through the U.S. mail. The bill, HR 5912, was approved by a voice vote in the Subcommittee and must now be considered at the full Committee level.
HR 5912 was introduced by Rep. John McHugh (R-NY) and is supported by AWMA. The measure is aimed at combating underage smoking and the illegal sales of cigarettes via the Internet. While many other delivery services – such as UPS and FedEx – have voluntarily stopped delivering these items, the U.S. Postal Service continues to provide delivery service for these tobacco products.
AWMA will continue to follow the progress of this measure and report to members on any new developments. |
